About Our Event
Spike For Charity & The University of Dayton:
With the reputation as one of the ten largest catholic schools in the United States and the largest of three Marianist Universities in the Nation, many students on campus have a strong connection to service and their community. In 2007, members of the business fraternity, Delta Sigma Pi, were nothing short of ecstatic about the idea for a new community service event on campus. With the help of 8 equally motivated professional fraternities, the event proved to be a tremendous success in its first year.
The first volleyball tournament was held April 26th, 2007, and since then has grown into one of the major events each year. The event hopes to eventually mirror the accomplishments of Christmas On-Campus, one of the nation's largest single-day, on-campus community service events.
The University of Dayton is also home to one of the largest campus ministry programs in the country, and the considerate service-oriented student body warmly embraced the new way to help numerous charities. The event utilizes the unique student neighborhood, community, and culture found only at The University of Dayton. The neighborhood's outdoor volleyball courts allowed studetns to sit on their porches, listen to music, barbeque, and cheer on their fraternities.
In a two-month period in 2007, the 9 fraternities raised just under $3,000 for the different organizations that were involved. For the tournament's fourth year, the fundraising goal is set at $15,000.
In 2006, The Princeton Review named The School of Business Administration one of the Best 282 Buisness Schools in the nation and also recognized the University of Dayton's entrepreneurship program as one of the top 5 in the Nation. UD's Flyer Enterprises is also the fourth-largest student-run business in the Nation. With these resources on campus, members from the University's business school incorporated their classroom and extensive hands-on experience in a unique way. They have taken steps to include the talented student body around campus.
This year, an executive board is comprised of members of each fraternity in the areas of Marketing, Computer Science, Accounting, Finance, Graphic Design, Photography, Leadership, Communication, English, Journalism, Fine Arts, Political Science, Entrepreneurship, Music and many others. Together, they collectively hope to use their diverse backgrounds to continue the events success.
Spike for Charity 2010 will take place Friday, April 16th, and Saturday, April 17th, 2010. Registration and other activities will begin in January. This year, there will be 12 fraternities involved with Spike for Charity, and they will represent 12 different charities.
